The Belfry

A rocket roost for a pole at the edge of the yard.

$88

House from $88. Finish and mounting extra.

Taller than the Colony, built for a dedicated pole when you do not have a tall sunny wall. Eight sides, a dark cap, and landing texture around the skirt. The box is four feet tall; the landing still has to sit 15–20 feet off the ground so a bat can drop into open air. A rocket box in the grass will not be used. Set the pole in the open, away from porch lights and the screech-owl box. In New England a building-mounted Colony usually outperforms a pole — use the Belfry when a wall is not an option.

Care

Leave it closed through the maternity season. A yearly look in November is enough. Dark finish matters — light boxes stay empty in New England.
